Chapter 13

The trio had spent the last week or so (Cadence had lost track at this point) at the hotel. She had been restricted to the room and never had the chance to explore or slip away after all the action a few days ago. She had barely seen Deiric since that day, and she sat in the room alone other than when Reimund delivered her meals and at night when Deiric returned to the room to sleep. He was cold and distant, never really acknowledging her much more than locking her in that familiar predatory gaze. She felt conflicted, ready to beg for his attention, for anything.

She was alone again, and the loneliness burned in her with more ferocity than it had that day they had met at the pier. Between that and the intrusive memories of Julio’s teeth ripping into her, his lips whispering against her skin; she was approaching her breaking point. She still wanted to leave with all her heart, but something mysterious pulled her toward Deiric and she secretly wished to feel close to him again. Huddled in her usual position against the pile of pillows against the headboard, her gaze fixed on the tv, not quite watching it, she shook the thought of him from her mind.

Today had differed somewhat from the rest. Reimund had come in earlier with her bag, instructing her to get ready to leave. When she had asked where they were going, he gave no answer and simply left her to her silence. He had been just as distant since she betrayed his trust, and it was deserved, she supposed.

‘No, I’m not the bad guy here,’ she thought to herself, twisting out of her position and dangling her legs over the edge of the bed, stretching.

She sat on the edge of the bed, her foot tapping anxiously on the floor. She had changed into a comfortable pair of leggings and a sweater earlier before settling back onto the bed, her hair pulled back into its usual ponytail. She was restless though, and she couldn’t help but fixate on every tiny sound in the hallway, each bang and creak setting her further on edge. The television was supposed to help distract her anxious mind, but it did nothing but elevate the paranoia that she was missing the sound of footsteps approaching.

And there they were, right on time, as if he knew her mind was racing toward that precipice, listening and waiting for him. The sound of his footsteps echoed menacingly down the hallway outside, his familiar, confident stride sending shivers through her as he drew closer.

The girl stood up from the bed silently, unsure what to do with the rush of adrenaline that was pumping through her at a relentless speed. Her wide eyes fixed on the closed door on the other side of the room to her and she waited nervously for the clicking sound of it unlocking from the outside. Seconds trickled by as the shadow beneath the door lingered as he seeming to hesitate before opening the door.
